REGINA — Data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) shows that urban housing starts in Saskatchewan increased by 82.2 per cent compared to April 2023.
Housing starts refers to the number of housing projects that started that month.
The province saw 337 housing starts in April 2024 compared to 185 in April 2023.
Regina saw 223 of the starts, with Saskatoon contributing 105.
Overall, April proved to be an important month for the province, as overall Saskatchewan has seen a one-per cent decrease in the number of housing starts from 1007 to 996.
Regina has seen a significant increase in housing starts for the year, totalling 503, an increase of 42 per cent compared to last year. Saskatoon has seen a decrease of 18 per cent, down to 465.
Nationally, Canada has seen a six per cent increase in the number of housing starts, much thanks to Atlantic Canada’s 118 per cent increase and Alberta’s 58 per ent increase.
Saskatchewan is joined by British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario as the only provinces that saw a decrease in the number of housing starts in 2024.
