REGINA - A new homeless camp has gone up, and already come down, in Regina.
The Facebook group Rally Around Homelessness confirmed that an encampment had gone up on the former Taylor Field site.
“Yes. Tents went up at the old Taylor field site where the community was promised affordable housing, years ago. Yes, cops showed up immediately to tear down,” they posted.
The shutdown has drawn reaction on social media from homeless supporters, who were quick to denounce the police presence.
The indication on social media is that the Taylor Field area was fenced off, and that no social workers were involved at this latest encampment shutdown.
The Taylor Field site is not far from the grounds where the Queen City Ex is currently under way in Regina.
The site currently consists of an empty lot. When the site was decommissioned there had been plans announced to turn the space over to affordable housing, but no project has ever gotten underway there.
There is also continued fallout from last week’s ordered clearing of a homeless encampment in front of City Hall, on orders from the fire department following a fire on the property.
Rally Around Homelessness confirmed on Facebook they plan to take legal action regarding that situation. They stated they have applied for legal funding from sources out of province and continue working with local legal resources.
