Blast from the Past: Wilkie's new rec director is Helen Meekins

50 years ago

Unity Winter Festival events included a figure skating show, snowmobile races, beard and moustache growing contest, tug-of-war, cream puff eating contest, hockey games and curling bonspiels. Gordon Burns had the longest beard and Don Robertson won the Best Try award. Lynn Leier was named Winter Festival Queen.

Winning the 59th annual Wilkie men’s open bonspiel were hometown curlers – Larry Bojarski, Val Schwab, Byron Miller and Tom Allen.

The Unity ladies’ rink of Helen Leier, Teresa Mitchell, Shirley Leier and Fuzz Hamm scored an eight-ender during competition at the Wilkie Curling Club’s annual ladies’ open bonspiel.

The RM of Round Valley was to receive up to $1,565 from the province for brush cutting, stone picking, painting of the municipal office and construction of a storage shed. Total cost of the work was estimated at $2,609.

Helen Meekins was hired as the new recreation director for the Town of Wilkie.

The Senlac Club hosted 4-H regional curling and the seniors won their division. The winning curlers were Shana Ayrey, Jamie Forbes, Jinaye Ayrey, Amy Lock, spare Chance Flad and coach Bill Ayrey.

Winning the Unity Curling Club’s Green Acres Men’s Open Bonspiel was the foursome of Lloyd Sloboda, Dwayne Flasch, Jason Sloboda and Gary Orr.

North West Terminal announced their plans to build a 40-employee ethanol plant in Unity, dependant on a contribution from the federal government’s ethanol expansion program.
