REGINA — More than 2,000 new regulated child care spaces have been established in Saskatchewan.
The governments of Saskatchewan and Canada have announced the establishment of 2,349 new spaces across the province. Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) hosted the announcement as its government was allocated 180 spaces through the provincial and federal partnership agreement.
MN-S is in the process of acquiring land in Saskatoon and Regina for each 90-space child care centre.
"Providing a culturally safe space for Métis children in their early learning years is key," Métis Nation-Saskatchewan, president Glen McCallum said.
"We know from various studies and our history that children who are raised with their identity, culture, language and values have a stronger chance of thriving.”
Funding for these new spaces is provided through the Canada-Saskatchewan Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, which provides a federal investment of nearly $1.1 billion over five years for child care in Saskatchewan.
