SASKATOON – A 28-year-old woman was sentenced to six-and-half years in prison for her part in 16-year-old Danil Tsannie’s death.
Keshia Rose Kakakaway pleaded guilty to manslaughter on March 7 in Saskatoon Provincial Court. She had originally been charged with first-degree murder.
Crown prosecutor Lana Morelli and defence lawyer Ron Piche entered a joint sentencing submission to the court, which Judge Lua Gibb accepted. With pre-trial credit while on remand, Kakakaway has four years and 10 months left to serve.
While sitting in the prisoner’s box with her wrists and ankles shackled, Kakakaway cried quietly throughout the proceedings. About five of her family members were in attendance.
Kakakaway, along with Erik Henricks, 27, were arrested in February 2022. Lance Littlecrow, 27, was arrested one month later.
There is a ban on publication on the evidence that was presented to the court Wednesday to protect her co-accused’s right to a fair trial. Henricks has elected to be tried by judge and jury in Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench.
In December 2022, Littlecrow pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
