Sask. man accused of trying to start wildfire to appear in Alta. court

Alberta RCMP arrested 63-year-old Alvin Sayer from Saskatoon and charged him with six offences under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and one offence under the Forest and Prairie Protection Regulation. The Forest and Prairie Protection Act enables the protection of the forests and prairies of Alberta from wildfire.

DRUMHELLER, Alta. – Alvin Sayer, 63, from Saskatoon, who is accused of trying to start an Alberta wildfire was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Drumheller Sept. 22.

Sayer was reported as missing to Saskatoon Police Service after he was last seen at a home in the 600 block of Appleby Drive on June 30. On July 1, Alberta RCMP arrested him after allegedly starting a fire by the Morrin Bridge along Highway 27 in Kneehill County.

Sayer was charged with six offences under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and one offence under the Forest and Prairie Protection Regulation. The Forest and Prairie Protection Act enables the protection of the forests and prairies of Alberta from wildfire.

Area farmers and firefighters brought the fire under control before it could spread too far.
