Mother of Saskatoon murder victim says she tried to save her daughter

Andrew Rosenfeldt is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Nykera Brown in Saskatoon.

SASKATOON – Cathleen Balon says she tried getting her daughter Nykera Brown away from her boyfriend, Andrew Rosenfeldt, who is now accused of killing her.

“When he wouldn’t let her talk to any one, I filed a missing person [report] with the Saskatoon police,” Balon posted on Justice for Nykera.

“I was able to track her down with the help of friends and sent the police to his residence.”

Saskatoon Police Service listed Brown as missing from Sept. 1, 2022, to Nov. 15, 2022. They said that she had not been in contact with her family, which was uncommon.

“Family is concerned that Nykera is in a vulnerable state,” said Saskatoon police in September 2022.

Then, on Nov. 15, 2022, Saskatoon police were called to a home at about 8:15 p.m. in the 100 block of Avenue P North and found Brown deceased. They arrested 25-year-old Rosenfeldt and charged him with second-degree murder in Brown’s death.

On Feb. 1, Rosenfeldt pleaded not guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court and his matter was adjourned to Feb. 22. The charge against Rosenfeldt hasn’t been tested in court.

For his appearance that day, Brown’s family and friends wore purple sweaters in recognition of domestic abuse.

“We filled the courtroom and lobby,” said Balon.

“Nykera’s middle name is Justice, not sure if everyone knew that,” said Balon. “But let’s make sure Andrew gets the full max sentence. Let’s get Justice for Nykera Justice Brown.”

Before Brown went missing, Balon said she talked to her every night and “told her how beautiful she was, how she was better than this.”

Balon posted photos of a battered Brown saying that’s what she endured.

“He abused her and when she was strong enough to leave, he took her from us.”

Brown’s favourite food was tacos, her favourite colours were purple and hot pink, and her son was her world, said Balon, adding that she is now raising him.
