PRINCE ALBERT - There will be an inquest into the death of 50-year-old Elaine Behm at Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert.
Behm was found unresponsive in her cell on Oct. 1, 2020. PGCC staff and Emergency Medical Services personnel tried lifesaving attempts but resuscitation efforts weren’t successful and she was pronounced deceased.
According to an August 2020 Alberta RCMP media release, Behm was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 51-year-old Darren Behm. Police say that at about 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2020, RCMP got a call about a man who was deceased inside a home on 47A Avenue in Lloydminster.
Elaine Behm appeared by CCTV in Lloydminster court on Sept. 10, 2020, and a judge had ordered that she be transferred to Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford for a psychiatric evaluation, according to My Lloydminster Now.
Elaine Ann Behm’s obituary states that she was predeceased by her husband Darren Behm and that she left behind two daughters.
The inquest into Eliane Behm’s death at PGCC will be held from May 8 to 12 in Prince Albert.
The Coroners Act requires. That an inquest be held into deaths of inmates at jails or correctional facilities unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due to natural causes and wasn’t preventable.
The purpose of an inquest is to determine the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury often makes recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
