REGINA – A serving inmate will spend another year in jail after assaulting a correctional officer.
Appearing on a four-count information in Regina Provincial Court on April 20, Kashtin Wade Joseph Hunter, 25, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing bodily harm against a correction officer. For his plea on the first count, the Crown stayed the remaining three counts in the information, as well as an assault charge in another information before court.
Court heard that the charges stemmed from an incident on the afternoon of Dec. 15, 2021. A corrections officer was performing an inspection in a cell believed to be where inmates were brewing homemade alcohol. Hunter and another inmate were in that cell at the time, with Hunter allegedly punching the guard in the face. A Code Black was called, and other officers came to assist
Hunter was placed in handcuffs after an altercation, but appeared to lose consciousness. After administering First Aid to the inmate, he struck another guard upon reviving. One officer incurred a fractured hand while another required stitches on his face.
A representative for Hunter noted their client was quite badly injured as a result of the scuffle, requiring a trip to the hospital. They also spoke of Hunter’s youth, calling it “a tumultuous upbringing” witnessing violence and substance abuse.
Judge Murray Hinds agreed to the joint submission suggested, sentencing Hunter to 12 months in custody, consecutive to the sentence he is already serving. The Victim Fine Surcharge was waived.
