Highways remain treacherous

Almost 300 collisions caused due to recent winter conditions.

REGINA — The month of November came in like a lion, as the per the old weather adage, and the combination of heavy snow and high winds made many roads treacherous throughout the province. RCMP noted that from Oct. 31 to Nov. 6, they received 298 reports of motor vehicle collisions with the majority of those over the weekend when the storm hit.

Of course, there are the well-known preparations drivers can take to stock their vehicles - extra windshield washer fluid, warm clothes, a blanket or two, non-perishable snacks, water, phone charger, candles, matches, booster cables, cat litter or some other method of gaining traction, a tow rope or chain, and a shovel.

“Don’t forget the ultimate essentials for driving in Saskatchewan in the winter: common sense and patience,” say the RCMP. “Check the weather forecast and Highway Hotline before you travel. If you may hit poor road conditions, postpone non-essential travel.”

If cancelling your journey is simply not an option, be sure to allow plenty of time to arrive at your destination. Driving for the road conditions is key, and could ultimately save a life.
