Former Maple Creek teacher back in court

Three sexual assault victims have come forward, police say.

MAPLE CREEK – The case of a former teacher with the Chinook School Division facing charges relating to historic sexual assaults continued this week.

A total of three victims have come forward in a sexual assault investigation dating back to the early 2000s. Police arrested Dexter Franklin Bacsu, 64, of Maple Creek earlier this year as a suspect allegedly involved in the incidents. He made another court appearance on Aug. 10 in Maple Creek Provincial Court, facing three counts each of sexual interference and sexual assault. Yesterday, the matter was adjourned to Aug. 16 in Swift Current.

The investigation continues, and Maple Creek RCMP believe there may be more victims.

“Dexter Bacsu was a long-time teacher in Maple Creek schools and continued to work as a substitute teacher until recently,” said RCMP in a media release. “Chinook School Division has advised he is no longer an employee. Dexter Bacsu volunteers in local youth sports and music programming, including as a coach and trip chaperone.”

The Maple Creek RCMP previously stated that they “take all complaints of sexual assault seriously,” investigating them with professionalism and care. They encourage survivors to come forward, regardless of how long ago the incidents occurred. What survivors share might help the ongoing police investigation, and the Maple Creek RCMP can be contacted at (306) 662-5550, or anonymous tips can be submitted to Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
