SWIFT CURRENT – RCMP members were kept busy recently with a rowdy pair of car thieves. On the morning of Oct. 30, a Swift Current Municipal RCMP member located a stolen car on the North Service Road in the city. The car fled, but not before smashing into an RCMP vehicle - effectively disabling it.
The car thieves managed to make their way to Hwy 1, where a second RCMP officer tried stopping it. This second officer was forced off the road by the suspect vehicle. Once back on the Trans Canada, things became quite scary.
"The car continued, entering the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 near Gull Lake and driving in the wrong direction at extremely high speeds," RCMP said in a news release. "Officers from Swift Current Rural, Maple Creek and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services joined to help locate the car."
The chase took members to Maple Creek where a spike belt was deployed along the Trans Canda. The trap deflated two tires on the suspect vehicle, but it continued at a high rate of speed.
"Officers were soon after able to manoeuvre the car off-road and arrest the two occupants," RCMP said. "No police officers reported injuries. A number of police vehicles were damaged during this incident; two are no longer driveable."
Brandon Condon-White, 24, from Montague, PEI and Kendell Marie Hardt, 29, from Charlottetown, PEI are each charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon; one count of flight from a police officer; one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; and three counts of mischief over $5,000.
Cordon-White was further charged with three counts of failure to comply with a probation order and one count of operation while prohibited. Hardt is also charged with one count of failure to comply with a release order and one count of failure to comply with a probation order.
Both will appear in Swift Current Provincial Court on Nov. 2.
