Accused shoplifter allegedly punches officer

Chase ensued, knife seized by police.

REGINA – A man who allegedly attacked a loss prevention officer after shoplifting made his first appearance in provincial court today.

Police responded to a weapons-related offence on March 8 at a business on the 3800 block of Sherwood Drive.

“Information stated that a male had stolen merchandise and when a loss prevention officer pursued, the male punched the officer and threatened with a knife,” said RPS in a media release.

The arrival of RPS at the scene didn’t stop the suspect, who tried to outrun officers.

“Police arrived and observed the suspect with the merchandise, and warned him to stop,” RPS said. “The male then fled on foot. Police were able to stop the male and place him under arrest. The knife was located and seized.”

John Trail, 41, was charged with assault with a weapon, shoplift under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
