Before Friday, the most new COVID-19 cases northern Manitoba had reported in one day was 57.
That record was more than doubled Friday, as 136 new northern cases were reported by the province Dec. 11.
The vast majority of the new cases are in the听Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake, where provincial data shows 237 positive cases, including 111 new cases announced Friday.
The real number of cases may be much higher - Shammattawa First Nation Chief Eric Redhead has said at least 300 cases of COVID-19 are present in Shamattawa, a town with a population of around 1,000 people. The Canadian Armed Forces arrived in the community Wednesday to assist in responding to the disease, providing medical care and additional manpower for testing, wellness and isolation checks, as well as evacuating Elders and high-risk people from the community.
The听Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake district, according to numbers from the provincial government, has reported 254 total COVID-19 cases as of Dec. 11. Only one other northern district - The Pas/OCN/Kelsey - has reported more total cases during the pandemic.
Increases in active cases were reported across the region, including minor changes. Thompson/Mystery Lake reported 10 more active cases of COVID-19, followed by six new active cases in Island Lake, two in Norway House and one new active case in the Bay Line,听Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry Portage/Sherridon, Nelson House/Nisichawayasihk and听Sayisi Dene/Tadoule/Barren Lands/Brochet/Northlands/Lac Brochet district.
Four districts saw net decreases in active cases, led by the听Grand Rapids/Misipawistik/Moose Lake/Mosakahiken/Easterville/Chemawawin, which saw one new case and six recoveries. Each of the听Bunibonibee/Oxford House/Manto Sipi/Gods River/Gods Lake, Cross Lake/Pimicikamak and听The Pas/Opaskwayak/Kelsey districts saw active cases decrease by one.
Throughout Manitoba, 14 more people have died from COVID-19, including eight deaths tied directly to outbreak at senior's home and health facilities. All the deaths reported Friday were in southern communities. Manitoba reported 445 new net cases, including over 300 cases in southern Manitoba.
No new outbreaks or possible public exposures have been announced by the province.
