Manitoba students and teachers now know when they鈥檒l be back in class this fall.

Provincial education minister Kelvin Goertzen announced via Twitter June 22 that students will be back in classes as early as Sept. 8, the day after Labour Day. Teachers and other staff will begin Sept. 2.

The provincial government had proposed starting the school year as early as Aug. 31, but Goertzen said after provincial consultation, the school year would start on its normal date.

鈥淲e listened to your feedback and it was clear that teachers and administration value time to prepare and collaborate prior to the resumption of school in the fall,鈥 Goertzen鈥檚 tweet reads.

鈥淲hile there will be a need for supplemental learning opportunities for many students in the next school year, the desire was that it be accommodated within the school year.鈥

Staff will be instructed on how to deal with recovery learning efforts and COVID-19 safety measures before students show up.

鈥淪chools will reopen for teachers and staff September 2, to provide time to prepare spaces, inform staff about health protocols and engage collaboratively on recovery learning approaches.鈥 Goertzen said.

Divisions are not booking activities during personal or professional development days to allow additional school days throughout the year.
