YORKTON - It was a day of smiles and celebrations for the Filipino community of East Central Saskatchewan.

Hosted by the Parkland Filipino-Canadian Association Corp the annual Pinoy Festival was held at Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton on Sunday.

Jenny Baraoidan, vice-chair of the association explained the festival is traditionally held in June or July and holding it at this time the day also celebrated Independence Day in the Philippines which is June 12.

The event also coincides with the harvest period in the Philippines added Jonathan Rosas, also with the association, so it is a time of thanksgiving as well. He said in the Philippines farmers will “give back to the community” at this time of year, adding it is very much tradition to share food with visitors.

“Filipinos help one another,” he said.

The local event certainly had food with lines at several tables serving rice, noodles and various meats. Rosas said somewhere in the kitchen was a whole cooked pig.

In addition to the food, a band of young musicians was on hand, and Baraoidan said there would be dance too.
