YORKTON – The Yorkton Maulers bested the Saskatoon Contacts 4–2 and 6–2 in back-to-back weekend matches.

"We've had a great first weekend beating Notre Dame and the Saskatoon Contacts twice," said Darrel Mann, Head Coach of the Maulers, in an interview with Yorkton This Week.

Mann told Yorkton This Week it's been an exciting start to the season.

"We've got eight returning players and 12 rookies," said Mann, adding, "we brought in a bunch of 15-year-olds last year and now those guys are 16-years-old and they're our leaders of our hockey club."

"They've really stepped up this year — you definitely can tell that they're a year older and a year wiser," added Mann.

And though Mann is happy with the team's performance so far, he said there are still some things the team can work on.

"Just getting used to playing in this league and the AAA Midget League," said Mann, "when young guys come in from playing AA it definitely takes a while and adjustment period."

"That's something we're really focusing on with our guys — we want to play a quick fast-paced hockey game and that's something we're really building for here in the start of the season," said Mann.

Mann, now in his second year with the club, said he's excited for what the 2023–24 season will bring.

"We've got our same crew that we were with last year and I guess for all of us it's another year with the organization and we're really excited with the group of players we've brought in this season and really excited for the 2023—24 season."
