Editorial: Explore the local possibilities

Over the last two weekends a seasonal band concert and choir event were held. For a city the size of Yorkton we are fortunate to have both groups.

YORKTON - Recognizing it is an oft-heard lament in Yorkton – you know the one about there СÀ¶ÊÓƵ nothing to do here – well this past weekend would be the retort to that.

This was one of those typically hectic weekends in the city with multiple bake sales, concerts, hockey games, and other activities just waiting for people to get out of the house to enjoy.

Realistically most understand there are a myriad of things to do in Yorkton and when suggesting otherwise it really is more accurately ‘there’s nothing going on right now that I want to do at this particular moment’.

There is unavoidable truth in that statement.

Take for example the chess meet up that now takes place at the Yorkton Public Library each Saturday afternoon. There have been chess groups in Yorkton in the past, but they had faded. It’s to the credit of David Smith that the new group is going, and it’s equally great to see people coming out. However, not every one who might wish to play can make a Saturday afternoon. It comes down to not СÀ¶ÊÓƵ able to please everyone all the time.

Now you might be at home and wanting to have horseshoes in the city, or cricket, or ultimate or many things that do not exist, and that too is understandable.

Some things, like horseshoes were very popular here in the not so distant past. A very active club existed but in time declined and folded.

A cricket club started, even began looking for where a proper pitch might go, then it too faded.

Of course just because something faded away once is not to say it could not return one day. All it takes is another person like David Smith with chess to get the ball rolling, and there could be all sorts of new activities in the city in the years ahead.

Remember pickleball and disc golf did not exist here 20 years ago and now both are popular pastimes for many.

In the meantime if you feel there is nothing to do why not simply try something a little different from the normal things that attract you.

For example over the last two weekends a seasonal band concert and choir event were held. For a city the size of Yorkton we are fortunate to have both groups, and while we sometimes discount local talent, their performances are a fine way to spend an afternoon when on. And, both groups are likely to welcome with open arms new performers too.

Do not discount the local talent here – it will surprise you in a positive way.

Just get out and explore what our city offers – maybe a New Year’s resolution to consider.
