YORKTON – The 13U AAA Yorkton Cardinals competed in the AAA League Championship in Regina over the weekend of July 23-24.
Despite not playing two league games, the Cardinals entered as the third seed. The Cardinals went undefeated in pool play on Saturday with wins over the Swift Current 57s (2nd Seed) and Regina Expos (5th Seed).
On Sunday, the Cardinals defeated the White Butte Broncos 6-4 in the semi-finals. The Cardinals did most of their scoring early, while starting pitcher, Nate Wandy, did not give up a hit and struck out 12 batters in his five innings of work to get credit for the win.
Swift Current worked its way back to the final on the other side of the playoffs and the Cardinals would again play spoilers on the higher seeded Swift Current defeating them a second time and winning the championship contest 9-6.
Trea Peterson of Sturgis was the starting pitcher and came away with the win, while Theo Cleland of Yorkton homered and stole home before securing a save in the final frame.
The team wishes to thank their family members, its boosters, its local baseball association, and its team sponsor Double D Fencing for their support.
