Mickey Vargo was born on July 23, 1924 in the Otthon District of Saskatchewan. In May of 1928, the family moved to a farm in the Rokeby area. Mickey attended Rokeby School and after completing his education he helped out on the family farm. In his early years, Mickey also worked in the bush camps in Ontario during the winter months. In 1947 Mickey and his brother, George purchased a farm in the Saltcoats District. In 1982, the brothers semi-retired from farming and devoted their time to breeding and racing their beloved thoroughbred horses. They were one of the first in the area to race horses. Mickey also rode in the races on the bush circuit in the surrounding area. July 1st Races at Saltcoats was one of the highlights of the summer. In later years, Mickey took his horses to race in Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon. Mickey was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Varga; his brothers, John, Edward, Rudolph, Steve, Gordon and Frank; his sisters, Irene (at birth), Mary, Margaret, Rose, Helen, Elizabeth and Lillian. He leaves to mourn his passing, his sister, Anne Cornwall of Orillia, ON as well as numerous nieces and nephews including Virginia Vargo of Rokeby, Irene Britton of Rokeby, SK, great-nephews, Nelson Vargo and Robin Britton and sister-in-law, Elsie Vargo of Rokeby, SK who all share his love of horses. Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 9, 2014 from the Saltcoats United Church in Saltcoats, SK with Thom Carnahan officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Shall We Gather at the River", "Church in the Wildwood" and "Bringing in the Sheaves". The Interment Service followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery with Jeremy Nabozniak, Marvin Nabozniak, Edward Sek, Erwin Schultz, Nelson Vargo and Robin Britton serving as the casket bearers.
