Anton Jakubiec of the Ituna Pioneer Lodge, formerly of Yorkton passed away peacefully on May 15, 2014, at St. Peter's Hospital in Melville. He was 90 years of age. Anton was born in Kalna, Poland, on June 10, 1923. He was one of five children born to Mike and Carolina Jakubiec. He received his education in Kalna and following went to school in Gliwice taking a Machinist Trade. Anton left Poland during World War II, living in London, England for two years and then immigrated to Canada in 1948. He took over his grandfather's mixed farming operation at Lipton, Sk and on May 29, 1949 he married Pauline Lekach. They were blessed with two children, Otto and Lorraine. Over the years Anton served as a board member for the Cupar School Unit, Balcarres Hospital and the Ituna Pioneer Care Centre. He also serves as councillor for the R.M. of Lipton #217. After 25 years of marriage, Anton decided it was time for Pauline to meet her mother-in-law for the first time and took her to Poland. Anton and Pauline retired from the farm in 1980 and moved to Fort Qu'Appelle and then to Yorkton in 1982. They took time to go camping, fishing, curling, played bingo, bowling and getting together with their friends to play cards. They especially loved time spent with their grandchildren. Retirement allowed them to travel to many places in the United States, often visiting Lorraine in Texas and Florida. Anton took up golfing, socializing at MacDonald's and Burger King daily with his friends and also had a passion for writing poetry and for sketching. Following Pauline's death in the fall of 1993 he moved to an apartment then on to Queen Elizabeth Court in November of 2001. He continued to lead an active life until the summer of 2013, due to failing health, he gave up independent living and moved to the Ituna Pioneer Health Centre. He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Otto (Nancy) Jakubiec of Yorkton, a daughter, Lorraine (Maurice) Cocca of The Villages, Florida; grandchildren, Gloria (Greg) Donnelly of Yorkton, James (Lisa) Jakubiec of Yorkton, Michael (Sarah) Jakubiec of Yorkton and Pam (Mitch) Marriott of Regina; great grandchildren, Aiden and Addisyn Jakubiec of Yorkton, Peyton and Mannix Donnelly of Yorkton and Jemma Marriott of Regina. He is also survived by a brother, Eugeniusz Jakubiec of Vienna, Austria, sister-in-law, Helena Jakubiec of Kalna, Poland; nieces, Rosa (Sandor) Molnar of Vancouver, B.C., Alexsandra (Norbert) Stiansy of Vienna, Austria and Halina (Leszek) Dziula of Kalna, Poland; brothers-in-law, Steve (Sophie) Lekach of Kelliher, and Joe (Doreen) Lekach of Ituna, along with numerous other relatives. Anton was predeceased by his wife, Pauline; his parents, Mike and Carolina Jakubiec and his mother and father-in-law, Mary and William Lekach; brothers, Michal and Boleslaw Jakubiec; sister, Wladyslawas Moczek; brothers-in-law, Edward Moczek, John Lekach, Matt Koback, Steve Koral, Nick Lekach, Mike Rawluk and William Lekach; sisters-in-law, Wanda Jakubiec, Anne Lekach, Irene Lekach, Katherine Koback, Anne Karol, Shirley Lekach and Emily Rawluk. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK with Father Francis Hengen officiating. The pianist, Pamela Yaremko, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Here I Am Lord", "Psalm 23", "I Will Never Forget You", "Peace", "Song of the Angels" and "Day is Done". The Readers were Lisa Jakubiec and Pamela Marriott; the Gift Bearers were James Jakubiec and Gloria Donnelly and the Cross Bearer was Michael Jakubiec. The Cremation Committal followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Anton's son, Otto Jakubiec serving as the urn bearer. A reception followed in St. Gerard's Parish Complex where Anton's son-in-law, Maurice Cocca shared words of tribute and eulogy.
