OUTLOOK - The pages of this very newspaper are winning awards these days!
As part of the annual Better Newspapers Competition, The Outlook staff including Derek Ruttle and Shelley Luedtke were up for a few awards, and the newspaper itself was in the running for Best Editorial Page for the Class B ranking.
When all was said and done, Ruttle placed third in the category of Best Wildlife Photo, and Luedtke placed second in the categories of Best Saskatchewan Arts or Cultural Series, Best Saskatchewan Recreational Story, Best First Nations Coverage, and Best Feature Story.
The Outlook did, however, take top honors for Best Editorial Page in the Class B ranking!
Judges comments on work presented by The Outlook:
“Great use of colour to support the article,” read one on our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation front page.
Luedtke’s story about the inaugural ArtVenture judges remarked, “The focus on the two-day event provides an interesting glimpse into aspects of the initiative, including the organizers and various makers who are involved.”
In another category it was noted, “Luedtke’s piece on an all-women climbing expedition was not only inspiring, but a good read. This is truly a recreational story, which other SWNA members could use as a marker for what a recreation story in your newspaper entails.”
In a story about the 5-year anniversary of a refugee family’s arrival in Outlook judges said, “Luedtke’s piece has all the elements of a great feature, employing heart-wrenching background, compelling personal details and anecdotes of redemption, multiple local voices and comprehensive information about all the aspects of the story.”
Her First Nations stories also caught the eye of judges. “Luedtke found the sweet spot of allowing her subjects to tell their stories without turning complete control of the narrative to them. Quotes were well chosen for their impact.”
About Derek’s photo it was said, “Ruttle’s image made me smile. I enjoyed his colourful commentary as to how he caught this inquisitive creature. Great patience, and a super shot.”
