OUTLOOK - On April 23 at Outlook High School and on April 24 at Kindersley Composite School, School Community Council (SCC) members from Sun West schools gathered for Supper and Share events. About 75 SCC members including parent/caregivers, school staff members and Board of Education Trustees attended one of the events and reviews were very positive.
As the name suggests, each event included a lovely supper and opportunities to network and catch up with old and new friends. Each event included the opportunity to start the meeting with a smudge led by Brie Phillips, the Sun West Indigenous Perspectives Consultant. Later in the evenings, Brie also provided an update about Indigenous Perspective initiatives within Sun West and the value they bring to all students.
Sun West Board of Education Chair John Collins and Director of Education Vicki Moore both brought greetings and thanked the SCC members for their dedication and especially for taking the time to attend the Supper and Share events. Board Trustees each attended one of the meetings with John Collins attending both meetings and Cathy Morrow, Karen Itterman, Sue Lytle and Scott Sander at the Outlook meeting and Ruth Griffith and Michele Whitfield attending the Kindersley meeting.
The theme of both evenings was “Elevating Parent Voice,” which was addressed in an interactive online presentation by Dr. Darcy Hutchings, the Director of Family, School and Community Partnerships with the Colorado Department of Education. Dr. Hutchings is well-respected for her achievements in the area of parent and community engagement She helped SCC members identify areas where they could become more involved in supporting students and schools and helped them brainstorm how put their plans into action.
A short video featuring interviews with SCC members was produced at the Outlook meeting. It can be viewed on YouTube at youtube.com/watch?v=n4IJaaWwdrA
