Back in 1906, the very first flower show was held in September at the City hall; imagine the excitement as those pioneer families gathered to enjoy the beauty of their gardens!聽 The Yorkton and District Horticultural Society has always worked closely with the City, and the group has always been grateful for the City鈥檚 ongoing support.聽 So as Mayor Bob Maloney has now completed his work on City Council, this is a good time to say thank you to Mayor Bob for all his gracious and enthusiastic support of our various events over the years.聽 Mayor Bob has opened our shows and conventions, and been an honorary green-thumb in various capacities on many horticultural occasions!聽 I was privileged to work with Mayor Bob for many years, and his kind, fair, upbeat, hard-working and positive work ethic always made every work day a pleasure!聽 So on behalf of the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society, we thank Mayor Bob, and his lovely wife Dianne, for 小蓝视频 such shining lights and positive examples in Yorkton!聽 After serving the City of Yorkton so well, you deserve time for yourselves again.聽 A bouquet of good wishes goes out to both of you as you begin this next chapter in your lives!聽 Thank you!

A very dear friend gave us a beautiful dish garden, and one of the plants included is the bright and cheery croton!聽 This plant is like a peacock among the chickens because of its large, glossy, brightly-colored leaves with colored veins.聽 While we treat them as exciting houseplants, in certain parts of the world, like Australia and Malaysia, they grow wild, imagine! 聽

Because these plants come from tropical climes, they love the sun!聽 So if we have them as houseplants, they should have a sunny location in the house.聽 If they are not receiving enough sun, they will let us know by losing the bright colors in their leaves.聽 But we should remember that they will not like to live near a heat register of where there might be a cold draft.聽 For their watering requirements, the soil should be kept evenly moist; that does not mean wet.聽 They don鈥檛 like to have wet feet, but gentle moisture.聽 As with all plants, check them regularly and if the soil is dry, it鈥檚 time for them to have some refreshment.聽 But water with care: most plants will be forgiving if we water a little less than needed; but if we overwater, they will struggle and suffer because they will start to rot.

Speaking of forgiving, this plant gives us a second chance.聽聽 If it seems to die back a bit in the winter, don鈥檛 give up on it, because it might come back from the root when the brighter spring sunshine begins.聽 They don鈥檛 usually have a problem with pests, but like any houseplant, we should keep an eye on them, just in case.聽 If the plant is a good size, we can take cuttings for more lovely plants:聽 our cutting should have three of four leaves on the stem; plant in a small pot and keep moist till it roots, usually in about four weeks. With proper care, our crotons can last for years.

The croton is a bright and exotic-looking plant that is a perfect example of plants that bring us color and pizzazz by their foliage alone!聽聽聽 聽

Visit the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society at www.yorktonhort.ca and see what鈥檚 new.聽 Still no live meetings planned; but see the list of gardening sessions available online with Lyndon Penner from the U of S.聽 It鈥檚 a wonderful way for us to learn something new about horticulture as we step back from this year鈥榮 gardens.

Thank you to our friends at Yorkton This Week, keep up the wonderful work!聽 Let鈥檚 pray for health for all, and brighter times ahead.聽 Have a great week!
