YRHS wrestler does well at provincial meet

Jessica Riffel, a Gr. 10 student at the YRHS, has been involved in the wrestling program at school this year.

She brought home a bronze medal from competing at the Saskatchewan Provincial High School Championship two weekends ago at Tommy Douglas school in Saskatoon.

Garry Gawryliuk who has been working with the YRHS wrestling program, said it wasn't a surprise that Riffel has been progressing over the past two years.

He said she's "hardworking" and "dedicated" to the sport.

"It was fun," she told the paper upon her return to Yorkton. You "meet lots of people."

There were over 200 other wrestlers at provincials with her, she said and there were a lot of weight categories.

Riffel said it was nervewracking at first but then she had fun, she said.

Riffel was on the YRHS team last year and had a fourth place finish.

She said she became interested because it's a "contact" sport and that it "uses muscles more
then anything".

She had a total of three fights and won one, she said.

Last year, Riffel said she placed in fourth, this year, she won third, next year, she is hoping to improve to second.

It brought an end to a very successful wrestling season for her. She also won a gold medal at the Bedford Road Wrestling tournament held in Saskatoon three weeks prior to the provincials. She is now ranked in third in the province at her weight class. She has also competed against girls much older then she is and she's looking forward to next season where her new experience will be an asset to her.

Gawryliuk said the school will be holding an awards night for the wrestling team sometime within the next two weeks.
