On Monday December 15th, the YRHS hosted its annual Big Buck Night for students and staff.
"We had 16 participates take part this year" says teacher Darren Wandy. The school started the event after teachers Darren Wandy and Rob Sharpe saw a need to show case the successes of their students who enjoyed hunting.
"This is an awesome event for our students! The kids that take part in the Big Buck Night may not take part and other school events, however they are interested in hunting so why not recognize them for it? This event is a way for these students to be part of our school slogan, "Family of Raiders" says Sharpe. The kids pay a small entry fee and the money collected is put back into prizes.
Everyone who signs up and pays their fee receives a prize even if they do not harvest a deer. Students are encouraged to practice good sportsmanship when selecting a deer to harvest. "Rob and I have told the students that we would like them to select mature deer when hunting. If they cannot find a mature deer to harvest, you still get a prize for taking part. Sort of a win-win situation" says Wandy. As for prizes, local business where also approached, they were Bird Dog Archery, Home Hardware and Eugene Wlock of Diamond W Ranch.
This year's overall and male winner of the YRHS Big Buck Night was Carson Cook with a score of 138 5/8. The female winner and second overall was Tara Lazurko with a score of 128 4/8.
