The YRHS curling teams took part over the weekend in district curling held at the Yorkton Curling Club and two of their three teams are qualified for regionals, said Grant Bjornerud, head coach of all three teams.
The YRHS boys team, including Paul Toth, Brennan Peleshytyk, Blaze Davie and Ryan Nagy.In their finals match on Saturday, they beat Invermay, 8-2, said Bjornerud.
The mixed team included Kelly Somogyi, Matricia Shwaga, Darren Tillman, Tara Lazurko and Amber Stachura.
They lost to Norquay in their final match 6-3. Bjornerud said he was hoping for at least one team to advance to the regionals, as competition levels are going up all over.
In previous years, the YRHS usually advanced at least one team to go as far as provincials."There's good competition out there," he said. "Teams are very evenly matched."
The girls team includes Jodi Onda-Inglis, Emily Gage, Shawna Turner, Devery Stachura and Brandey Blahut.
"It was a successful weekend," he said. The boys won the gold with a finishing record of four wins, no losses, the girls team went 1-2, and the mixed team also went 1-2 but secured a silver medal in a pool of three teams.
Melville was the only other entry.
As a result of districts, the boys team moves on to regionals which will be held in Churchbridge while the mixed team heads out to Norquay.
Pressure will start to mount as only two of the eight competing teams will qualify for Saskatchewan High Schools Athletics Association provincial curling action in Regina.
