Yankees starter Jeremy Johnson pitched a complete game for his first win of the season as the Yorkton E & S Yankees defeated the Canora Supers 7- 1 in a rain-shortened five inning game at the Al Sapieha Field in Canora during СÀ¶ÊÓƵ East Senior Baseball League action Friday.
Johnson struck out three while giving up only two hits. The Supers jumped out to an early one run lead when Graham Lamb scored on an Adam McTavish single. However, that was all Canora could muster as the Yankees battled back with two of their own in the second inning when Evan Wasylyniuk and Garrett Karcha were driven home on a hit by Dennis Gilchuk that was eventually ruled an error on somewhat of an odd play.
Gilchuk's grounder deflected off the glove of Super's second baseman Ryan Coleman and hitting him in the face, resulting in a trip to the hospital for repairs. The Yankees scoring was completed in the fifth inning when five runners crossed the plate. Runs were scored by Gilchuk, Johnson, Wasylyniuk, Kurt Karcha, Garrett Karcha Derek Kohut, and Tom Cook. Hits were recorded by Cook, Dennis Gilchuk, Kurt Karcha, Wasylyniuk, and Mitchell Datema each with singles.
Johnson added a single and double and Garrett Karcha hit a double. Single RBI's were achieved by Cook, Jeremy Johnson and Derek Marshall; Wasylyniuk had two.
The Yankees played in Melville on June 19 to take on the Bison in a game that ended up СÀ¶ÊÓƵ called due to rain delay.
"The Yankee/Bison game in Melville was suspended in the third inning due to rain with the Yankees leading 4-1," explains Wade Karcha, Yankee manager. He said there is no word on when the game will be completed and it will continue from the exact point of suspension with Yorkton up with two runners on base and as many outs in the third inning.
Cook started on the mound for the Pinstripes and Jeremy Houle started for Melville, says Karcha.
Johnson, Cook and Kurt Karcha each had one hit and a run batted in for Yorkton.
Karcha, Datema, Mackenzie Unyi and Dwayne Wandy all had runs scored before the game was called.
