On the strength of a group of players who have no doubt gotten used to СÀ¶ÊÓƵ on the winning side of the scoreboard more often then not, the Yorkton Atom AA Xerox Terriers have captured the СÀ¶ÊÓƵ East Minor Hockey League Championship.
Atom Xerox Terrier teams have now collected four championship trophies in a row, thanks to some good coaches and some pretty good players.
Chad Korczak and company are now the fourth set of coaches to claim the title.
The Terriers entered the playoffs on top of the league standings with an unblemished record of 18-0.
That put them in a playoff matchup with the fourth-placed Estevan Bruins in a best-of-three series.
Like their larger Junior 'A' counterparts about a month ago, they made quick work of the Estevan squad, sweeping the series. That put the Xerox Terriers in against their arch-rivals, the Moosomin Red Barn Badgers. Yorkton had not lost as Yorkton was able to sweep that series too, in front of a large crowd on their home rink.
It has been four consecutive years that the Yorkton AA Atom program has won the finals. The team then brought their winning ways to Calgary where they were just short in the final game
Korczak said despite the series sweep against the Badgers, the series wasn't as easy as they thought.
"Moosomin always plays us tough," he told the paper. "They're a young team, full of energy. I didn't think it was going to be a cakewalk."
Over the past four seasons, the Xerox Terrier teams have a combined record over the last four years of 181-21-9-1. The 'one' represents the only shootout loss the team has ever had, said Korczak.
"We never wore down," he added "It tends to get to be a long year."
