The Yorkton United Storm U-10 soccer team emerged gold medal winners in Division II play at the Regina Soccer Association Youth Tournament over the weekend (Jan. 14-16).
Jairus Pellatt scored the tie breaking goal with four minutes to play against REU Boca in the gold medal game, snapping a 2-2 tie. From there, the Storm held on for the one goal victory, making it four straight times this season that the Storm have defeated Boca.
Jordin Rusnak, who paced the Storm with 14 goals in five games, added a single in the championship finale, as did Thomas Djagowez.
Rusnak collected all three in a 3-nil decision over the Saskatoon-based Dundonald Wolves in Sunday morning's semi-final. Matthew Stackhouse got the shutout, his second of the weekend. The round robin began Friday night with the Storm downing REU Chelsea 4-2. Rusnak had three and Stackhouse, who also took free kicks for the team, picked up one. Chelsea won the breakaway tournament at the start of the season.
So the win was extra special for the Storm, who failed to qualify for the gold medal game in that event despite going unbeaten.
On Saturday morning, the Storm beat a game group of 2003 born players representing AC Pumas by a score of 5-0. Rusnak picked up a pair of goals while Djagowez, Pellatt, and Stackhouse also hit the scoresheet.
On Saturday evening, the Storm had a strong second half en route to a 6-2 win over Boca. It was another dominating performance by Rusnak, who scored five of his team's goals. Stackhouse had the other, his third free kick goal of the weekend.
The impressive string of five straight wins over the course of less than 48 hours is further magnified when factoring in four regulars didn't make the trip, leaving the team with just three substitutes for the weekend action.
From here, the Storm get back to practice so they can prime themselves for Winter Fest, which takes place in Regina Jan. 28-30.
