The Yorkton Regional High School will be the site of two big archery competitions in the next 14 days, says Darren Wandy of the YRHS.
This Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., the school will be holding its own tournament featuring paper-faced targets. Teams participating will be: the YRHS, Columbia School, Dr. Brass, MC Knoll, Saltcoats, Melfort, Melfort Composite, Churchbridge, Canora, Raymore, Esterhazy, Langenburg and Bert Fox School.
Wandy said he's looking at hosting about 200 shooters in this, their fourth year running the tournament.
"There's not that many tournaments in the province," he said, adding that one of the reasons the YRHS can host is because they can facilitate up to 40 shooters at once.
He added that there are at least a pair of schools that are new to archery and he said he's hoping they will develop further, Raymore and Bert Fox haven't shot before, he said.
The tournament is usually hosted at some point in early April, notes Wandy, but noted that due to the basketball season as well as complications in Melfort, the tournament got pushed into May, as well as the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) shoot, which is scheduled for the final weekend in May, says Wandy.
"This way, we don't have to worry about basketball," notes Wandy.
At this weekend's shoot, top archers will be presented with plaques.

The NASP provincial shoot is now scheduled for May 28, he said, noting that it used to be in April but got pushed back a month.
He said that close to 400 shooters are expected in Yorkton for what is the biggest archery shoot the school will host. It will be run by Saskatchewan Wildlife. The Yorkton Regional High School is reigning champion in the team game having won the top school award three years in a row.
Wandy credits both Saskatchewan Wildlife and the Good Spirit School Division for putting on the shoot.
