Skate Extravaganza on Sunday at FAA

By Jeff Schneberk Staff Writer

The Yorkton skating club presents "A Variety Extravaganza" on March 27 showcasing 102 skaters from Yorkton, Springside, Kamsack and Wolseley and Ebenezer.

Highlighting the carnival, which will take place at the Gallagher Centre, will be international competitors and 2011 bronze medalists in seniors pairs, Rudi Sweigers and Paige Lawrence.

They are considered to be one of the best pairs teams in the world.

Also expected to be part of the show is Canadian competitor, junior men's medalist Garrett Gosselin.
"They'll be on in the afternoon," says Marlene Hauser, president of the skating club in Yorkton.

"They were in China and they were at Canadian nationals," she said.

Hauser said she hopes that a large crowd comes out to see them perform.

"They are amazing. They are even better now," she said referring to their performance at last year's carnival.

Hauser added that it will be nice to see them impress on Sunday.

"I'm sure hoping they'll be a pleaser," she said with a bit of a laugh. "They train 12 months of the year.

The performance by Sweigers and Lawrence will be sandwiched in between performances by various members of the Yorkton Skating Club, she said.

"The kids will be grouped according to their skating ability. It will be an olde style variety show," adding that some of the club's older skaters are looking forward to doing solos, some of which will go on the ice as part of the pre-show scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Some of the skaters scheduled to perform include: Koen Kucher-Paulmark (BMO Skate Canada Saskatchewan Pre-Juvenile men's champion), Nicki Nagy (BMO Skate Canada Saskatchewan Juvenile Ladies silver medalist),
both are part of the Skate Saskatchewan Sask First High Performance Tier I team, and Emma Taylor (member of competitive development team).

Tickets for the Extravaganza are available at $5 for adults and $3 for students.
