The Sacred Heart senior girls volleyball team took part in the 16-team Mega Wish volleyball tournament in Regina this past weekend.
The Lady Saints began the tournament facing their Highway 10 rivals Melville. SHHS played very well from the start of the match controlling the play and winning two straight 25-21 and 25-20. The Saints then faced Thom Collegiate of Regina again winning two straight 25-14 and 25 - 20. The final round robin game on Friday was against a very strong team from Leboldus High School of Regina. Leboldus used its height advantage and defeated Sacred Heart 15-25 and 17-25.
With a 4-2 record the Lady Saints placed second in their pool.
The Saints were then re-pooled into a very strong pool. The first match was against Lumsden. In a well fought match the lady Saints fell 19-25 and 20 - 25.
The fifth and final match Friday was against Luther High School of Regina.
Game one went to Luther 17 - 25, but the Lady Saints rallied back to take game two 25 -16. Saturday morning SHHS played Balgonie losing two straight 14 - 25 and 22 - 25.
Placing third in their pool placed the Lady Saints on the Consolation side of the tournament. In the quarter final Sacred Heart faced fourth place YRHS.
The all-Yorkton match was a see saw battle, but the Lady Saints prevailed defeating YRHS 25-22 and 25 - 17 to advance to the semi-finals and send YRHS home.
In the Semi Final SHHS faced Swift Current. In game one, the lead changed several times with Swift Current eventually taking a close game one 21-25.
SHHS came out strong in the second game winning convincingly 25 - 12 to force a third and deciding game. In game three, a slow start hurt Sacred Heart and Swift Current won 10 - 25.
Coach Perry Enns said "This was our best tournament of the year, we have improved every week and our tournament results show it. We played the weekend with only eight players and two of the absent players are starters." Two players went to provincial golf and two stayed to play in the Saints home soccer tournament. "I was very happy with the play of our two power hitters this weekend. Gr. 12 Dana Shymanski really began to hit the ball well as the tournament progressed and Gr. 11 Mariel Kotyk provided strong defense in the back row and strong hitting while in the front row."
The Lady Saints will travel to Estevan this weekend.
