On April 6 in Canora, Rita Fetsch competed in her first high school career badminton tournament and won a gold medal in girls' singles. On April 11, Morgan Shymanski won what would be her first of four gold medals of the season.
Her first gold came at the York City tournament when she took top spot in the girls' singles event. Also at that tournament, Kristen Jonassen and Riana Skikewich combined to win silver in girls' doubles.
On April 16 at Melville, Shymanski won her second gold in as many tournaments, while Jonassen and Skikewich continued to make life rough for their opponents, both also upgraded to gold following the York City tourney where they turned in silvers.
Hanna Hansen and Montana Balysky teamed up for gold in mixed doubles play, Justin Guy and Jaedon Pellat won silver medals in boys' doubles while Justin Poirier won second place in boys' singles.
Two days later, the team played at the City championships (Sacred Heart vs Yorkton Regional where the top two finishers in each category would advance to Districts).
It was that tournament where Shymanski remained unbeatable as she won gold medal number three in girls' singles and Fetsch placed in second.
In boys' singles at the same tournament, Poirier and Garrett Betker came in 1-2. In girls' doubles, Jonassen and Skikewich collected gold, while Guy and Pellat won second place in boys' doubles. Hansen and Balysky finished first in mixed doubles and Savanna Medvid and Brendan Griffith came second.
While at the regionals over the past weekend, Sacred Heart finished second overall in the team aggregate standings, trailing only Esterhazy. Sacred Heart won the gold medal in girls singles at every tournament they were in. Fetsch won one gold and Shymanski won gold as well as City Championships. She also won the City Championship last year in girls' singles and is poised for a strong high school career.
Coaches Brian Chisholm and Dean DePape were very impressed with the dedication and determination of the team this year. Jonassen and Skikewich won gold and two silver medals in junior tourneys but also won a bronze medal as an emergency replacement team in a senior tournament.
District results May 3 at the Yorkton Regional High School. Fetsch, bronze, girls' singles; Jonassen/Skikewich, silver, girls' doubles; Shymanski, gold, girls' singles.
