The Deer Park Municipal Golf Course has seen an awful lot of action over the summer. It started out with four different Open tournaments in early August and continued into this past weekend when a bunch of golf enthusiasts from all over the province gathered for the Sask Power provincial event.
John Whitehead, one of the spokespersons for the tournament said it was nice to return to Yorkton.
The annual event makes stops in a different Saskatchewan city each year, going up north, then going south. This year's stop in Yorkton was highlighted by weather that according to Whitehead, golfers love.
The tournament was one of the biggest of the summer for the course, he said.
The amount of registered people hit 160. Previous highs for Deer Park this summer were around 144.
Whitehead added that it was a full house in terms of registration. There were 40 teams.
Players came from as far away as Saskatoon and North Battleford. Whitehead said 40 teams signed up. Twenty-eight men's teams and 12 women's. The tournament was played over two days and included lunch at the end of day two, says Whitehead. They played by shotgun start and both days started early at 8 a.m.
Whitehead said one of the reasons they chose Deer Park is because of the condition of the course.
"Allan's team is unbelievable," Whitehead commented, referring to the groundscrew kept by the club's head professional, Allan Sauser.
"This is a great place to play golf," an enthusiastic Whitehead went on to explain.
Situated on the west of Yorkton on Highway # 52 and on rolling, heavily-wooded terrain is a beautiful setting any golfer can enjoy. Deer Park is one of Saskatchewan's top-ranked 18 hole championship golf courses with water, sand and multiple tee areas that compliment the already challenging terrain.
He also noted that there are "lots of people that help out with the tournament (not just himself)" and that the club's chef is really good too.
The Sask Power group sat down to a lunch of sausages and lasagna.
"I can't say enough about Allan's team," Whitehead concluded.
Upcoming at the course heading into the fall are the Deer Park Cup and the Oktoberfest tournament.
