SASKATOON — Some of the best softball players in the country are expected to put on a show with the city hosting the 2021 Rawlings Grand Slam Softball Championships set from Sept. 2 to 5 at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex.

The four-day tournament is held in cooperation with the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association and Softball Canada. Canada is considered to be one of the softball powerhouses in the world.

Some of the competing teams will have players from Softball Canada’s 2021 32-person national team pool. Local pitcher Devon McCullough, who was recently named Top Pitcher in the International Softball Congress’ Men’s Fastpitch World Tournament, will also be playing.

A total of 19 teams from across the country will be competing for the top honours in the Rawlings Championship.

The men’s division will have 10 teams, two each from British Columbia to Ontario, including the hometown bets — the Saskatoon Angels.

The Under-23 men’s division will have nine squads, including one from Newfoundland and two from SASA’s Keith McLean Division — the Saskatoon Diamondbacks and the Delisle Pride.

Games begin on Thursday, Sept. 2, with one taking place at Van Impe Stadium at 9 a.m. and another match at the Joe Gallagher Field at 9:30 a.m. The finals will be played on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
