The Yorkton Raider boys' basketball team went off to Prince Albert over the weekend and ran into some stiff competition, says coach Jason Payne.

In three games, the team got a win against Saskatoon's Mount Royal.

YRHS won the game 56-37.

"Defence has been sort of our hallmark all season," Payne said.

Their first game put them up against the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings, with the Vikings taking a 70-51 victory.

The following game of the tournament was their closest game of the three they played. Going up against Moose Jaw's Vanier, YRHS played well enough to win, says Payne, but they couldn't hold on as the game wore on.

There were turnovers too, said Payne but the main reason was a loss of "composure down the stretch".Payne said Dalton Bakke had a good game playing against some players Payne said Bakke was familiar with from previous years playing high school basketball.

"He plays good defence," he said of Bakke, who helped keep Moose Jaw to 54 points.

The YRHS team's next action goes this weekend when the team departs Yorkton for Swift Current, Payne said. Practices will be held each day this week, he adds, leading up to Friday when the team will head out on the road by 11 a.m.

The Raider squad also competed in the 1st Annual York City challenge. The played four teams from Weyburn, Aden Bowman, Prince Albert (Carlton) and Regina (Martin).

YRHS won two and lost two, beating Weyburn in the first game, 63-51 and the final match of the tournament, 90-47 over Martin.

In between were defeats to Aden Bowman, 77-69 and Carlton, 57-48.

YRHS is also expecting to hold a five-team mini tournament in March involving Sacred Heart, Weyburn, Melville, as well as a team coming in from Brandon.
