In a day that saw three, four-quarter football games played out one-after-the-other, you are bound to see some interesting things. They include, but are not limited to, the element of sportsmanship was on display Saturday at Century Field.
When the YRHS Raiders seniors played Weyburn, everybody paying any attention to the football game knew exactly who the Weyburn Eagles' trainer is.
It happened to be a woman who was wearing a red shirt.
The only reason I know that is because she was on the field more often than the kicker was.
She was busy helping players off the field.
In the previous YRHS Raider junior game, everything got intense for a few minutes-twice.
Two incidents, one of them was pretty bad, occurred during that game and two different players required the ambulance for assistance getting off the field.
The play in football gets very rough sometimes. It happens all the time. Players literally got tossed around, some get injured, some don't, but everybody was on their sportsmanlike best on Saturday.
Players on both teams mentioned 'good game' to each other while leaving the field.
The other instance was during the YRHS senior game against the Weyburn Eagles.
Two players, one from each team were tossed into the Yorkton bench.
A pair of YRHS players helped the Regina kid get back up and the Regina kid actually responded 'thanks'.
The more dangerous plays come when a player goes down for more than a few minutes. Nobody is sure what exactly happens, but as they do in the pros when it seems like it could be bad, everyone goes down on one knee. Players on the field stop moving. The ambulance comes out and attempts to lift a player to help as quickly as possible.
In both cases Saturday when it came out, both players were taken away and then everyone claps.
The ambulance was required twice in the YRHS vs Weyburn game, but there were at least four times when the trainer was called out for assistance.
Jason Boyda, coach of the YRHS seniors likely didn't come up with the term, but he's the one who told me about it.
There is the 'Raider way' of etiquette. It was more than once on display Saturday .
"It's Raider football," he claimed. "It's the Raider way of doing things."
He also noted that while players are assigned to knock each other out on the football field, in between the play is where it really shows the 'Raider way'.
It's playing between the whistles, suggests Boyda.
It was also on display that day in the gym during YRHS volleyball action in a game against Melville.
