The Pee Wee 'A' level Yorkton Terriers are provincial champions following their 6-3 doubling up on the North Battleford Barons Sunday afternoon at the Kinsmen Arena.
The winner was determined by a two-game goal total, meaning that Yorkton needed only a tie to win the series Sunday.
They had opened the set with a 5-4 win in the opening game.
Kelly Maddin, head coach of the Pee Wees said it wasn't easy to make it through three straight series en route to capturing the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) title.
"We had decent expectations," he said the following day. The team was made up of players from three different clubs and put together just nicely enough to knock off three other teams, including Weyburn, Swift Current and then finally, the North Battleford Barons in the final match played here on Sunday.
Against Weyburn, Maddin noted that his Terriers won "quite handily".
Against Swift Current, things got a little tougher. They had won the first game by a 4-2 count, then the second matchup went into double overtime, he said, adding that Yorkton ended that one "fast".
Yorkton captain, Kade Johnson, told YTW that the series was definitely "hard-hitting" but "we were pretty confident going into it".
He said they overcame a bigger Battlefords team, too. "We used our speed, they are big guys," he offered.
Maddin said that it was a pretty good season and his first time on a provincial title-winning team.
"This is my first year coaching a provincial winning-team."
Yorkton played games in all three cities so there was quite a bit of traveling involved.
Maddin's team was made up of players ages 11-12 and they made it through the most important time of year with no injuries, he said.
Brandon Pelletier led the team in scoring and Maddin said the goaltending duo of Dawson Stefanyshyn and Carter Park was "solid".
He thanks assistant coaches Lynton Evans and Jeff Flett as well as manager Jeanette Johnston.
Maddin said the team will have their accomplishment formally recognized with a banner-raise at the arena where they got their big win.
