The Ken Newell curling team of Norquay, sponsored by Challoner Farm, won two big games in
Kamsack on January 3 to capture the Duck Mountain Super League (DMSL) trophy, during the playoffs held at the Broda Sportsplex.
Curling with Evan Rostotski (third), Michael Maga (second), and Jason Lukey (lead), Newell faced the team skipped by Don Bowes of Madge Lake in semi-final play. Newell was up 4-0 in this contest and stayed ahead of Bowes, sponsored by Cottenie and Gardner, until the final rocks were thrown.
In the other A-side semi-final, Fred Perepiolkin of Kamsack, sponsored by Nykolaishen Farms, overcame a 3-0 deficit and was one up coming home without the hammer against Rick Kinaschuk of Benito. The Benito skip, sponsored by W.F. Schneider and Son, attempted to draw the button with his last stone but wrecked on a guard.
Before starting the A-side final, Newell and Perepiolkin agreed to play a six-end game.
Perepiolkin was leading 3-2 after four ends, but faltered in the fifth when Newell scored four points. After a brief pause, the defending champion conceded the victory to Newell and his team.
Newell has now won two DMSL titles. His first win was in 2009.
Meanwhile, in B-side semi-final action, Richard Jordens of Madge Lake, sponsored by Ritchie
Industries, narrowly defeated Brad Knutson of Norquay. Bob Kolodziejski of Canora, sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, reached the B-side final by besting Tyson Leis and the Young Guns of Kamsack.
Jordens was down 3-0 in the B-side final, but eventually tied the game and won by raising a rock behind heavy cover in the final end.
Speaking on behalf of everyone who played in the 2019-2020 Duck Mountain Super League, its chief executive officer, Thomas Jordens, acknowledged curling rink staff and volunteers in Canora, Benito, Norquay and Kamsack.
The generous support of DMSL sponsors, who generated $2,400 in prize money, was also saluted.
