There was an awful lot of golf played both locally and on the professional scene last week. The SGI Canada Junior Order of Merit Tour was played at both York Lake Golf and Country Club and at Deer Park Municipal golf course. And the Men's Open and Ladies Open were also at Deer Park Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Also, the Bridgestone Invitational was also held and it made the strangest headlines I've ever seen since I started covering golf.
Usually when an athlete wins at something, they are greeted by a horde of media who proceed to ask whatever questions they can think of.
Tiger Woods has seen his share of press conferences. Adam Scott has probably had a bunch too.
Scott was in for another one this past Sunday, however his caddie (former Tiger Woods caddie Steve Williams) had other ideas.
The person who has been dubbed the game's highest-profile bag guy (Williams) decided he was going to call one for himself at the Bridgestone Invitational which was held at Akron, Ohio.
His golfer, Scott, had just won an elite tournament that he won by four strokes but instead of him telling everyone listening how he managed to pull it off, caddie Williams decided it was time for him to have his own little press conference.
I wonder what the reporters there were thinking when Williams started talking to them about the happenings involving his release from Woods' entourage.
Williams went on to explain in as much detail as he could the circumstances behind the Woods saga.
I wonder what Scott was thinking at that time.
Woods has long been the centre of attention for nearly everything golf, this time however, his name was tossed around for something he didn't even do.
The golf superstar hasn't even played a round since May but that didn't seem to stop his former caddie from calling him out for something Woods had nothing to do with.
Apparently, that, in the world of golf is a no-no. Supposedly caddies carry a large bag all over the golf course and do nothing else.
This caddie however, did everything under the sun. Judging from a photograph posted on the canoe.ca web site, one could easily think that Williams was the golfer and Scott was the caddie.
Even thought Williams took advantage of the media spotlight (something they apparently aren't supposed to do), golfer Scott let it go and avoided getting into the spat between Williams and Wood.
It would have been plenty interesting if the PGA put Woods and Scott together for the first two rounds of the PGA Championships this week.
Woods is supposedly ranked at number-37th in the world. His former caddie is in for a payday close to three times what Woods makes for the 37th place finish.
For Scott's win, Williams gets a 10 per cent cut, reportedly. That means roughly $140,000 is coming Williams' way.
