Former member of the Yorkton United Futbol Club Steven DeLong has been playing university soccer for two years in Newfoundland.
It was recently announced on the school's website that DeLong and cross country runner Erica Prichett have both been awarded the Memorial University Subway Athletes of the Week, period ending Sept. 26.
DeLong is a second-year forward with the men's soccer program. He had a breakout weekend recently during a two-game sweep of the Acadia University Axemen.
In the home opener played on Saturday, the native of Yorkton scored the first two goals of the game. Memorial won the match 3-nil. In the second game of the doubleheader played out on Sunday, he once again showed his exceptional speed and finishing ability on his way to his second straight two-goal performance, and another 3-nil Seahawks win.
DeLong made a call into Yorkton This Week Monday morning and said it was good to get the acknowledgment for having a good weekend, but added that there are bigger things at stake for his soccer club.
"It's more just a personal thing. We got two wins out of the weekend so that's good."The four goals on the weekend gives DeLong six on the season through only four games played, which is good enough for second in AUS scoring.
Memorial in turn improved its record to 3-3-1 with the doubleknockout of Acadia.
Memorial University plays out of the Atlantic University Conference, along with competing schools from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. DeLong said despite having a good weekend leading up to his award, he's not about to start basking in the glory just yet.
"The season's going good, but it's only half done," he explained. "We still have six games left!"As of Thanksgiving weekend, Memorial is looking to break a streak that nobody on the team is too proud of-they haven't qualified for the post season in at least three years, says DeLong.
We were "not very good last year," he added.
The top six schools in the conference qualify for post season, currently, Memorial sits in eighth.
