Local Connection to World Curling Win

Top curler married to Outlook native

When the Team Canada curling team won the men鈥檚 world championship in Edmonton earlier this month, it鈥檚 possible that there was some loud cheering going on in homes in Outlook.

That鈥檚 because the team, consisting of skip Brad Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Walker and lead Geoff Walker, has a connection to Outlook.聽 Well, one member of the team does anyway, as Nichols is married to Colette, who was formerly a Lemon and originally hails from Outlook as the daughter of Nancy and the late Hugh Lemon.

Team Gushue firs won the Brier for Newfoundland and Labrador, but the cinched the World Championship on Sunday, April 8 for the entire country as they knocked off Sweden to claim the world title.

The Canadian foursome went a picture perfect 13-0 in at the world event in Edmonton.聽 This feat makes them the first team to go undefeated at the world championship since the tournament expanded to 12 teams.

And while family, friends and fans rushed onto the ice to celebrate the epic win with the team, Nichols placed an important phone call to Colette, who is two weeks away from having their second child and couldn鈥檛 make it to the world championship event in Edmonton.

"She's been through it all with me, and for her not to be here hurt," Nichols told CBC Sports, fighting back tears. 聽"But I know she's got to look after her health and our second child."

Mark fought with the pressure of the Brier and the world championship while his mind strayed to his wife and family back home.

"I've been so nervous," he said. 聽"Every day I wake up and make sure she's doing good."

Nichols said he's going to have an incredible story to tell his unborn child one day, about the time Dad won a Brier and a world title just days before the baby arrived.
