Kee's TKD provincial tourney results

Twenty five athletes from the Yorkton Taekwondo club were registered at the 2011 Provincials in Moose Jaw on April 2. The event was hosted by Kim's Taekwondo in Moose Jaw.


Twenty five athletes from the Yorkton Taekwondo club were registered at the 2011 Provincials in Moose Jaw on April 2. The event was hosted by Kim's Taekwondo in Moose Jaw.

The event is always a great development opportunity for coloured belts and junior black belts to measure themselves against other Saskatchewan competitors.

Once again the Yorkton club showed the province that they are the most competitive club in Saskatchewan.

There was a referee seminar hosted on the Friday conducted by the provincial referee chair, Susanne Mitchell. She led the referee team on Saturday with help from other Yorkton referees. The Yorkton referees were: Monica Fraske/Bornyk and Andrew Bazin.

Tyler Buenneke had a great performance with a gold in patterns competition and a sparring gold in the under 10 light male blue/red belts, sparring.

Zane Chopik and Daniel Bazin both had a great performance. Daniel captured third in sparring while defeating Zane in an entertaining overtime match. Zane finished in fourth but got the bronze medal in the pattern competition.

Kallie Buenneke did very well in her return to sparring. She was victorious in the under-eight Little Dragon division through three matches. The gold medal match was won with an impressive 11- 4.
More sets of double medalist in coloured belts Patterns/Sparring were: Liam Cherry with silver/silver, Seth Cherry with gold/bronze, Justin Fookes with bronze/bronze, Connor Watrych with bronze/gold and Tristan Watrych with bronze/silver. Kyle Schmidt also gained two medals, one for gold in an exhibition division and one for Silver in the under 13 boys advanced.

The black belts all competed utilizing the Daedo Electronic Body protector system. The Yorkton black belts all performed well.

Devon Frounfelter competed in a Junior "B" Black Belt light weight division getting two golds in sparring and patterns. Eric Fookes got two silvers in the Junior "B" middle weight division. Austin Stinson also was a double medalist also with Silver in patterns and a bronze in sparring.

Balance of results are: Kathryn Lohnes, Junior "B" Heavyweight, sparring, gold; Kathryn Lohnes, Exhibition Junior "A" Middleweight Sparring, silver; Shane Varjassy, Junior "A" boys black belt Light Sparring, gold; Clark Bazin, Junior boys "A" black belt heavy, sparring, silver; Samuel Lohnes, Junior "B" Boys black belt Heavy weight, sparring, gold; Jaret Porte, junior "C" boys Black belt light weight, sparring, gold; Francis Bazin, Junior "A" boys black belt Heavy, sparring, gold; Matthew Bodnaryk, Adult Male Light Weight, sparring, gold; Autumn Ashcroft, Adult Female - Feather Weight sparring, gold; Rae Ashcroft, Adult female - Light weight sparring, gold.

Saskatchewan Taekwondo presented their Elite Athlete of the Year awards at the 2011 Provincials.
Kees Yorkton dominated the Elite athlete awards taking all but one division. The cash award winners were: Best adult male black belt - Matthew Bodnaryk, Best adult female black belt - Autumn Ashcroft, Most promising adult female black belt - Rae Ashcroft, Best Junior Male black belt - Francis Bazin, Most promising Junior male black belt - Clark Bazin, Most promising Junior female black belt - Kathryn Lohnes.
