Petrie Whitehawk competed in shot put, two races and the long jump at the Aboriginal Indoor Championship in Saskatoon March 4 and 5.

A member of the Kamsack Track and Field Club was only two centimetres from a bronze medal in the long jump.

Petrie Whitehawk, a student at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, was a member of the club who competed at the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Indoor Championships on March 4 and 5 in Saskatoon, said Chantel Kitchen, a coach.

Whitehawk placed ninth in shot put, third out of 30 competitors in the 60m dash, fourth out of 19 in the 150m race and fourth out of 31 competitors in long jump, finishing just two centimetres behind the bronze-medal winner.

She is now considering participating in the national trials in Prince Albert that will be held in September, Kitchen said. If she is selected for her age group, she would be competing in Toronto in the summer of 2017 for Team Saskatchewan.

Gerri Basaraba, another member of the club, had to withdraw from the Saskatoon meet due to a family emergency, she said.

No other indoor meets will be attended by club members this year, but athletes plan on taking part in some outdoor spring meets in Regina, Yorkton and Saskatoon, Kitchen said.
