Jr. Cards win three

The Alexander's Mens Wear Junior Cardinals went three up three down in preseason play over the weekend, winning twice on home field and once on the road in Manitoba where everything went their way and then some. It wasn't a bad start to the 2011 season. Not a bad one at all. Things came together slowly then they got even better. In the first of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, Yorkton jumped out to a 1-0 against the Hamiota Diamond Dawgs.

Yorkton took the lead and never looked back, said Gary Lamb, co-coach of the Junior Cardinals.
"It was a really good game," he said of the 3-1 win.

Logan pitched," he said, adding that the ace took down eight of the nine batters he faced, by striking them out.
"There was a little rust," quotes Lamb referring to the overall game, "but we played well".

In the second game, the Cardinals "kind of went silent for five innings" says Lamb, but apparently that did not matter because they would take control shortly after, rolling to a 6-3 win in their second home exhibition game at Jubilee Diamonds.

Yorkton went through four different sets of arms and Calanchie supplied a pair of runs. Colby Parachoniak, Dalane Lamb, Luke Boechler, Ross Stilborn and Jayden Shwaga all got their names on the scoresheet.

That capped action on home park for the weekend. Next up was a road trip east where they took on Swan River and cruised to a 22-2 win.

"We scored lots," quoted Lamb. Stilborn led the scoring with three triples. Daniel Lamb smoked one out of the park, and added a triple and a double, said coach Lamb.

"Everybody hit the ball, solid pitching and strong defence."

Next up for the Cardinals is senior/Masters games this week. Last night, Lamb said they were in Canora and tomorrow night, they are back at home to face Parkland.

Results of the Canora game were not available at press time. Tomorrow's matchup is an 8 p.m., start time at Jubilee Park.
