Now they're 2-0.
This time last year it was the other way around.
The Yorkton Gridders PeeWee football team dismantled the visiting White City Riders 22-6 in front of the crowd at the Kinsmen Century Field Saturday afternoon during the city's first dose of Regina Minor Football League action of the season.
Jason Farrell, head coach of the Gridders is now completely focused on winning the championship and believes his team now has what it will likely take to do that.
"The defence played great. Everyone's concentrating on their tackling."
He said that going into the game, he knew White City would be good and even told his team that the Riders were one of the best in the league.
White City had their share of problems late in the game. They had good field positioning but couldn't get anything going to narrow the gap. They turned the ball over twice in the last three minutes."It's a big shoutout to coach Payne and coach Toppi," says Farrell.
On the player front, Darius Haberstock and Brendon Weber split the scoring duties, each running the ball for a touchdown twice in the win.
Ryan Crochak and Nick Payne split the quarterbacking duties.
The Gridder's next home game is scheduled for Sept. 4 when they take on the Vikings at Century Field. The game starts at 12 noon, and will be followed by the YRHS Raider junior team taking on the Stampeders.
The Gridders are playing out of the Reed Division of the Regina Minor Football League. With their win on Saturday, Yorkton remains unbeaten at 2-0.
They will play their second road game on Sept. 12 at the University of Regina field against the Wolverines.
The Gridders and Junior Raiders will play much of their season schedule as back-to-back games, both home dates and road.
Following the Wolverines game, both Yorkton clubs host games on Sept. 18; the Gridders are on at 10 a.m., and the Jr. Raiders at 11:45 a.m. Both games will be held at the Century Field.
In case of rained out games, there will be time slots Sept. 21 at Regina's Mosaic Stadium.
On Sept. 25, the Gridders host the Warriors at 10 a.m., and the Jr. Raiders play the Mounties.
On Oct. 2, the Gridders will head back to Mosaic in Regina at 1 p.m., and the Jr. Raiders will play in Lumsden, also at 1 p.m. On Oct. 10, both teams will bus up to the University of Regina, where the Gridders play the Razorbacks, while the Jr. Raiders go at it with the Sundevils. Action starts at 1:45 p.m.
