Gridders top Regina in season opener

That didn't take long. Not long at all. The Yorkton PeeWee Gridders football club did something they did not do last year and that's win the season opener.

That didn't take long.

Not long at all.

The Yorkton PeeWee Gridders football club did something they did not do last year and that's win the season opener.

"The Yorkton Gridders beat the pants off the Regina Patriots at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday, 26-12. This is (also) the first time in Yorkton football history that a PeeWee team from Yorkton has beaten a team from Regina," explains Jason Farrell, Gridder head coach.

He talked a week or so ago about "the sole goal" for the 2010 PeeWee Gridders in this version of the Regina Minor Football League, was to come out on the winning end against any team based out of the Queen City.

It wasn't supposed to be an easy win for the Gridders, but according to Farrell, it wasn't hard."They (we) dominated right from the start. I'm surprised that it came together as quickly as it did," Farrell continued.

"We didn't know anything about them."

Brandon Webber packed the highlight reel with three touchdowns for Yorkton.

"He's really fast," says Farrell. "We expect that from him."

Thirteen-year-old Zach Kais scored the other Yorkton touchdown.

Farrell said Yorkton won the game because of their ability to run the football up the middle and Regina had no answers.

"Regina couldn't stop him," Farrell says of Webber's work on the day. "It was a really well-paced game."It wasn't bad at all for

Yorkton especially considering that the Gridders bussed up to Queen City with seven guys short of a full squad.

That didn't seem to bother anyone, Farrell said.

Defensively, Yorkton functioned as well as their offence did, he adds.

"Coach (Joe) Toppi had a really good defensive plan. Tanner Mak played well as middle linebacker."The head coach also pointed to the entire offensive line.

"Another mention should go out to Caleb Bymak, Isaac Pasloski, Jadyn Rusnak and Andrew Solonenka."

Yorkton's next action is scheduled for this Saturday (Aug. 28) when they host the Riders at Century Field in their 2010 home opener.

The Yorkton Junior Raiders are also scheduled to play on that date. They will host the Renegades, scheduled to commence immediately after the Gridder game.

The roster for the Gridders 2010 football team includes, on offence Caleb Bymak, Zach Kais, Logan King, Reid Krasowski, Ryan Krochak,Riley McGill, Isaac Paslowski, Nick Payne, Jaydin Rusnak, Andrew Solonenka, Brendon Weber. The offensive unit will include Rowan Blazeiko, Cole Burkholder, Brenden Derbowka, Darius Haberstock, Brett Harasymuk, Kris Pidperhora, Jaden Porte, Blaise Zrudio, Tanner Mark, Greg Denbrok.
