The Yorkton Skateboard Club is hosting their 3rd Annual Skateboard Freedom Tour. This year's event is scheduled for this Saturday afternoon (June 11).
Tucker Chornomud of B3Xtreme Skateboard Shop in Yorkton, said the day should be a good one, starting off at 12 noon and running until 6:30 p.m., and will run in the same location the Yorkton Curling Club takes in the winter.
Also making an appearance at the show will be native of Quebec, Dan Pageau, a pro skater and has been competing at skating since 1995.
He's spent a solid five years as a pro skater in California and has a third place win under his belt from the 2002 EXPN Invitational.
The Freedom Tour is doing its third annual skate show this Saturday. It will open with a skate clinic from 12 noon-1 p.m., a skate demo from 1:15-2:15 p.m., and topped off with a skateboard jam from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
Admission for the day is $5 and Chornomud is still looking for skater entries. Entries can be made with Chornomud at B3Xtreme Sports in Yorkton at 782-3629 and can also be made on location on Saturday.
His list of sponsors includes: the Yorkton Skate Club, the Berrics (a world famous web site for skateboarding), Skin City Tattoos, Red Bull, Three06 (a skate shop in Regina), Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Yorkton and District, Unlegit and Saskatchewan Lotteries.
Chornomud said it's hard to say what the turnout will be like in terms of the number of people who take part, but added he's hoping for at least the same turnout.
As the days draw closer, he's getting excited.
"Of course," he said.
The best part will probably be the jam session.
He said "a lot of kids" will probably take part.
"It's a goal of theirs. (You'll see) how bad they want to win it."
Chornomud added that he's grateful to the support of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Yorkton and District for their help, as well as "a lot of local skaters who help out with posters".
ANOTHER TOUR
The numbers have been going up, too, he said, adding that neighbouring towns have shown interest in having the Freedom Skateboard Tour visit other centres in hopes of adding even more interest to the sport.
"Other communities have been calling us," he says, noting that there is a possible date lined up for Esterhazy on June 25.
"We're in the works of making it an actual Tour," he said with a gleam in his eye. Such a Tour would possibly see the group make stops in Esterhazy, Fort Qu'Appelle, Humboldt as well as St. Rose Du Lac, MB.
Saturday's Freedom Tour will also include live music, a tattoo booth and a paintball booth. The clinics is free. The cost to enter the jam is $10 and admission to the Freedom Tour is $5. Everything will be held at the Curling Rink in the Gallagher Centre.
