Finals don't live up to Grey Cup expectations

Although games are never over until they are over, this one didn't compare to other regular season games played between the two teams.

Yorkton residents David Baron, Gene Krepakevich, Don Szabo and Bob Mettzler teamed up and made the 10-plus hour trip to Edmonton hoping that their green Riders would get some revenge on the same team they encountered in the CFL's championship match last year.

Baron said the game was nothing close to the matchup played on July 1, in that sense, the Cup game failed to live up to expectations.

"Having seen the July 1 game... it was so exciting."

In this year's Cup game, both clubs scored majors early and then the scoring was almost nonexistent, especially in the third quarter.

Baron told Yorkton This Week, about five minutes after getting in the door from a long trip home, that Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo proved that he is the best in the business at what he does.

Although neither him or Darian Durant did a whole lot in terms of making spectacular plays, the score was kept close most of the game, but Montreal was able to secure their second straight Grey Cup win.

Says Baron, it was a little bit better than last year's mess.

"Last year was a real downer."

This year, wasn't a whole lot better, from his vantage point

"It wasn't what I hoped it would be," he said.

It was an interesting four days for the four locals, including hearing several of the 'visiting' voice their opinion of the poor treatment they claimed they were getting while in Edmonton.

Baron said the last play for the Riders was tough to watch. Watching Durant scramble to avoid the sack was interesting but acknowledged that the situation was tough to watch but exciting nonetheless.

"With the Riders, you are never quite sure. Both QBs were overthrowing people."
